Book Club at Saint Basil

  • Saint Basil American Coptic Orthodox Church (map)

Calling all lovers of spiritual books! We have started a Book Club at St. Basil to read together spiritual books as a tool to help us in our spiritual walks and for edification. If you are just curious about spiritual books, haven't done much reading in the past, or if you are a long-time reader and want to meet with others who love reading, then this is the place for you!

We meet on Tuesdays at 7:30pm. THIS WEEK (3/27/2018), we will continue reading the book titled: On the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ by St. Philaret of Chernigov, a 19th century Bishop from Russia.

A quote from the book:
"'Ye are they which have continued with me in My temptations. And I appoint unto you a Kingdom' (Luke 22:28-29).
Having denounced His disciples' desire for earthly power, the Lord still gave them the honor that their labors deserved. How many troubles, how many insults and bitter offenses the Pharisees and scribes inflicted upon them--partly aimed at their Master, and partly directed at them! Until then they had remained with Him when 'among the chief rulers also many believed on Him; but because of the Pharisees [and Sadducees] they did not confess Him' (John 12:42). The strictness of the Master's life, the strictness of His teachings, and the depth of His mysteries likewise did not make them leave Him. All of this was the work of their patient love. For the labor of patience they deserved a reward. And the Lord showed His disciples the lofty reward awaiting them, although it was not the one they were dreaming of, since they were carried away by the opinions of people."
