Weekly Update - 17 August

Quote of the Week

"Blessed are you, Christ: for you, who are 'the true light,' entering into the lamp of humanity, have nourished with the oil of the Spirit the wick of our nature, setting it alight with the brilliant rays of divine glory. You have brought light to creation through a human vessel, setting this little lamp alight, which neither Peter nor James nor John dared look upon with human eyes; but these topmost branches of the disciples' tree, falling on their faces, confessed how inaccessible the light is."

O pride of human nature, our joy and love, glory and peace, victory and wisdom and sovereignty, gathering of every good thing, which no tongue can express, no mind can grasp, no span of time can age! O divine gift to humanity and offering from humanity to God! O one full of grace and of the glory of the Holy Trinity, domain of every good thing! O unwedded bride, the Mother of God Emmanuel! ... You are truly the living book in which the Word of the Father was written by the pen of the life-giving Holy Spirit. ... You are truly the mediator and intercessor and bearer of our salvation, as you always are watching over and helping the faithful people."

St. Ephraim the Syrian (commemorated on Wednesday 22 July)

St. Ephraim the Syrian (commemorated on Wednesday 22 July)

Quote of the Week

Metropolitan Anthony Bloom of Sourozh once explained how during one Liturgy he went out to give the homily and said the following: "Yesterday evening a woman with her baby came into the church during services. She was wearing pants and no head covering. One of you criticized her. She left. I don't know who criticized her, but I hereby order them to pray for her and that baby until the end of their days, so that God will save [the woman and her baby]. Because thanks to one of you she might never again come to church." He turned around and left. That was the whole homily.

“Understand two thoughts, and fear them. One says, 'You are a saint,' the other, 'You won’t be saved.' Both of these thoughts are from the enemy, and there is no truth in them. But think this way: I am a great sinner, but the Lord is merciful. He loves people very much, and He will forgive my sins.“

Quote of the Week

Apostles' Fast

Today we begin the Apostles' Fast, which will end on the feast of the Apostles Paul & Peter on 12 July.

We fast for many reasons, not least of which is so that we can learn to discipline our bodies and to cultivate control over our bodily desires and passions.

The basic diet that we observe during the fast is a vegan one (no animal products), however, during this fast the Church permits seafood, except on Wednesdays on Fridays when fasting is more strict.

It is important, however, to not only adhere to a specific diet, but to actually fast by abstaining from food or drink for a certain period of the day. It is highly recommended that each member of the Church consult with a spiritual father as to how they will observe the fast.

May God grant us a fast that will fruitfully produce saints!

Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen!

Quote of the Week

"In the future life, a Christian will not be tested as to whether he renounced the world, whether he fasted, whether he performed vigils ... but he will be diligently examined as to whether he has any kind of likeness to Christ, as a son to his father, as Paul says, 'My little children of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you' (Gal. 4:19). The likeness of Christ is composed of truth, meekness, righteousness, and, together with them, humility and love of men."

—St. Simeon the New Theologian
