Weekly Update - September 14

Quote of the Week

"The Divine Services in their composition contain all the fullness of the dogmatic teaching of the Church and set forth a path to salvation. They present invaluable spiritual wealth. The more fully and precisely they are fulfilled, the more benefit the participants receive from them. Those who perform them carelessly and who shorten them by their laziness rob their flock, depriving them of their very daily bread, stealing from them a most valuable treasure. The shortening of the services which comes about through a lack of strength must be done wisely and performed circumspectly in order not to touch that which should not be tampered with."

St. Pimen the Great (Commemorated on 9 September)

Quote of the Week

"He who has love, lays down his life for his neighbor. For if one should hear an offensive word, and is himself able to respond with similar words, yet does not utter them, or if he is wronged, yet endures it and does not repay the one who has wronged him, then such a one lays down his life for his neighbor."

— St. Pimen the Great

Weekly Update - 17 August

Quote of the Week

"Blessed are you, Christ: for you, who are 'the true light,' entering into the lamp of humanity, have nourished with the oil of the Spirit the wick of our nature, setting it alight with the brilliant rays of divine glory. You have brought light to creation through a human vessel, setting this little lamp alight, which neither Peter nor James nor John dared look upon with human eyes; but these topmost branches of the disciples' tree, falling on their faces, confessed how inaccessible the light is."

"O treasure house of all virtues! O facilitator of supernatural benefactions! O flower of every perfume! O pride of human nature, our joy and love, glory and peace, victory and wisdom and sovereignty, gathering of every good thing, which no tongue can express, no mind can grasp, no span of time can age! O divine gift to humanity and offering from humanity to God! O one full of grace and of the glory of the Holy Trinity, domain of every good thing! O unwedded bride, the Mother of God Emmanuel! ... You are truly the living book in which the Word of the Father was written by the pen of the life-giving Holy Spirit. ... You are truly the mediator and intercessor and bearer of our salvation, as you always are watching over and helping the faithful people."

St. Ephraim the Syrian (commemorated on Wednesday 22 July)

St. Ephraim the Syrian (commemorated on Wednesday 22 July)

Quote of the Week

Metropolitan Anthony Bloom of Sourozh once explained how during one Liturgy he went out to give the homily and said the following: "Yesterday evening a woman with her baby came into the church during services. She was wearing pants and no head covering. One of you criticized her. She left. I don't know who criticized her, but I hereby order them to pray for her and that baby until the end of their days, so that God will save [the woman and her baby]. Because thanks to one of you she might never again come to church." He turned around and left. That was the whole homily.
