THANKS FOR A BLESSED RETREAT!

By the grace of God, we concluded our first annual retreat yesterday. I cannot articulate how joyous and happy I was by the participation and love that was shown by all who were in attendance. The laughter, the games, the talent, the mingling and the discussions were immensely edifying and profitable. For those who were not able to attend, please try and make sure that you can on the next occasion. I thank again the four who put so much time into getting all of this together with such short notice on behalf of us all. It was an immense success, and your labour of love was not unnoticed. May the Lord recompense you here and in the age to come, and may the Lord keep us all of one another as well. - Abouna Antony

Christ is born! Glorify Him!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"Behold a new and wondrous mystery... All join to praise this holy feast, beholding the Godhead here on earth, and man in heaven. He Who is above, now for our redemption dwells here below; and he that was lowly is by divine mercy raised... For with God we look not for the order of nature, but rest our faith in the power of Him who works... Come, then, let us observe the Feast. Truly wondrous is the whole chronicle of the Nativity. For this day the ancient slavery is ended, the devil confounded, the demons take to flight, the power of death is broken, paradise is unlocked, the curse is taken away, sin is removed from us, error driven out, truth has been brought back, the speech of kindliness diffused, and spreads on every side, a heavenly way of life has been ¡in planted on the earth, angels communicate with men without fear, and men now hold speech with angels."

NATIVITY FAST

November 25th marked the first day of the "Little Fast," also known as the Nativity Fast. It's also sometimes called "the Winter Lent". Fasting is not just about changing ingredients; it should be a real spiritual discipline with goals. Technically, all the faithful are supposed to be fasting the fast if they wish to partake of Eucharist. At the same time, I know that I am not everyone's spiritual father, and I know that there are limitations to people fasting that need to be considered. I encourage each of you to take the discipline seriously and to consult with your spiritual father for an appropriate prescription for your fasting period, as well as what spiritual disciplines to partake of during this blessed time. If you want to sit with me to talk about it, no problem! We can arrange a program for each to follow. We'll be discussing the fast during the Sermons and possibly take on a book study for this period. May the Lord bless this fast for all of us and let it be a source of fruit to all of us. -Abouna Antony

All are also encouraged to listen to the liturgical hymns as they are chanted at St. Basil, which can be found here.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"Behold and see, sons of God, and know today, that you are appointed since time immemorial to become saints without blame in the fullness of God’s love, that is Christ’s, who is in you and you in Him. Have you accepted this grace today? Have you pledged in your hearts and consciences to truly be sons of God in accordance to the pleasure of His will? This grace is offered to you today and every day. Accept it, and live it, as you should in accordance to the ethics, principles, and behavior of the saints, as sons of God and the eternal life you were called to."

KIAHK PRAISES & AGAPE MEAL

On Saturdays during the month of Kiahk, we will be praying the Kiahk midnight praises immediately following Vespers. In order to allow families to stay and participate without impacting bedtime for the kids, we will begin with the first several canticles and then break for a time of fellowship and a light meal together. For those who are able to stay, after the meal, we will resume Tasbeha. To bring food and snacks for the meals, please reach out to Silvia Guirguis.

PARISH CLEANING DAY

This Saturday, we ask for as many as possible to come help clean our parish in preparation for decorating for the Nativity Feast! While many diligently help every week to keep things clean, we are overdue for a deep cleaning. We will be focusing on tasks like cleaning windows and blinds, washing the carpet, and organizing. Additionally, we are hoping to have several men join us who are willing to help clean and organize in the altar. We will be there from around 11 a.m. until Vespers starts, so please drop in any time. God willing, we hope to make this a quarterly event, in order to decrease the amount of work and time needed each time.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"What we gain from fasting does not compensate for what we lose through anger. Our profit from Scriptural reading in no way equals the damage we cause ourselves by showing contempt for a brother. We must practice fasting, vigils, withdrawal, and the meditation of Scripture as activities which are subordinate to our main objective, purity of heart, that is to say, love, and we must never disturb this principal virtue for the sake of those others. If this virtue remains whole and unharmed within us, nothing can injure us, not even if we are forced to omit any of those other subordinate virtues. Nor will it be of any use to have practiced all these latter virtues if there is missing in us that principal objective for the sake of which all else is undertaken."

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Do you fast? Give me proof of it by your works.
If you see a poor man, take pity on him.
If you see a friend being honored, do not envy him.
Do not let only your mouth fast, but also the eye and the ear and the feet and the hands and all the members of our bodies.
Let the hands fast, by being free of avarice.
Let the feet fast, by ceasing to run after sin.
Let the eyes fast, by disciplining them not to glare at that which is sinful.
Let the ear fast, by not listening to evil talk and gossip.
Let the mouth fast from foul words and unjust criticism.
For what good is it if we abstain from birds and fishes, but bite and devour our brothers and sisters?
May He who came to the world to save sinners strengthen us to complete the fast with humility, have mercy on us and save us.

“The Lord did not come to make a display. He came to heal and to teach suffering men. For one who wanted to make a display the thing would have been just to appear and dazzle the beholders. But for Him Who came to heal and to teach the way was not merely to dwell here, but to put Himself at the disposal of those who needed Him, and to be manifested according as they could bear it, not vitiating the value of the Divine appearing by exceeding their capacity to receive it.”

St. Demetrius of Thessalonica, commemorated 8 November/29 Paope

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Once, the holy Fathers of the Egyptian Scetis were talking prophetically about the last generation.
“What have we done?” they said.
One of them, the great Abba Ischyrion, replied, “We have carried out the commandments of God.”
They asked him, “What will those who come after us do?”
Abba replied, “They will do half as much as we have done.”
Again they asked him, “And what will those who come after them do?”
Abba Ischyrion replied, “They will not have any monastic activity whatever, but they will be permitted to have troubles and afflictions, and those who persevere will be superior to us and our fathers.”

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

The brothers asked an elder, “How is it that God in the Scriptures promises good things to the soul, and yet the soul does not desire them, but instead turn aside to impurity?” And he answered and said to them, “It is my opinion that it is because that soul has not yet tasted the good things which are above, and therefore the good things which are here [on earth] are dear to it.”

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"As thou takest thy seat at table, pray. As thou liftest the loaf, offer thanks to the Giver. When thou sustainest thy bodily weakness with wine, remember Him Who supplies thee with this gift, to make thy heart glad and to comfort thy infirmity. Has thy need for taking food passed away? Let not the thought of thy Benefactor pass away too. As thou art putting on thy tunic, thank the Giver of it. As thou wrappest thy cloak about thee, feel yet greater love to God, Who alike in summer and in winter has given us coverings convenient for us, at once to preserve our life, and to cover what is unseemly. Is the day done? Give thanks to Him Who has given us the sun for our daily work, and has provided for us a fire to light up the night, and to serve the rest of the needs of life. Let night give the other occasion of prayer. When thou lookest up to heaven and gazest at the beauty of the stars, pray to the Lord of the visible world; pray to God the Arch-artificer of the universe, Who in wisdom hath made them all. ”

St. Basil the Great, Prolegomena
