Congratulations to Nicole Williams for her baptism!  God grant her every spiritual blessing and growth in our Lord Jesus Christ.

IMPORTANT || COVID-19 UPDATE AND PROTOCOLS

Covid Infection numbers continue to be high especially with the new variant. Our prayers are with those who have tested positive for the virus and those on the front lines caring for the sick.  We know as Christians that we should not conduct ourselves in fear or lack of faith. However, we should also act rationally and with sensitivity towards others. 

For the safety of yourself and those around PLEASE, be mindful of the following:

  1. Please wear a mask at church to protect the younger members of our congregation who have not been vaccinated. 

  2. If you have been in contact with anyone that has been infected and/or tested positive, even if no symptoms are observed, kindly do not come to any of the church services until you have tested negative.

  3. If you, or anyone you know, have attended church services and have tested positive for the virus a few days later, please inform Fr. Michael who will let those who attended the same services know so they they can also be tested. Identities will be kept confidential. Please see above regarding attendance at church services.

Also, we will be streaming once more downstairs for those who feel more comfortable with greater social distancing.

NEW URBAN EQUIPMENT AND RENOVATIONS

You may have seen some minor renovations upstairs near the back of the church!  One of the urban-making pieces of equipment is nearing the end of its life and therefore new equipment needed to purchased.  Also, as Sunday attendance continues increase, this new piece of equipment will help with a higher production of the urban.  We will also move most of the equipment to the back room to allow for more volunteers to assist in this precious service.  The work entails installing the new equipment, some plumbing, electrical work and new flooring.

  1. If you have been in contact with anyone that has been infected and/or tested positive, even if no symptoms are observed, kindly do not come to any of the church services until you have tested negative. 

  2. If you, or anyone you know, have attended church services and have tested positive for the virus a few days later, please inform Fr. Michael who will let those who attended the same services know so they they can also be tested. Identities will be kept confidential. Please see No. 1 above regarding attendance at church services.

  3. Consider wearing a mask inside church, especially if you are not vaccinated.

ST. MARY’S FAST

This is the last week of fasting for the Feast of St. Mary the Theotokos.  We will have vespers and veneration praises Wednesday (8/18/21) through Saturday (8/21/21) at St. Basil’s Church (7:00 PM – 8:30 PM).  Hymns will be followed by a small talk from a selection of special guest speakers!  Be sure to join us for this spiritual revival!

August Message from Fr. Michael Maximous

St. Mary’s fast is of course one the highlights during August on the Church Calendar. The fast began on August 7th and ends on August 22nd when we celebrate the revelation to the Apostles about the Assumption of St. Mary’s body. St. Mary continues to be a source of inspiration and real support through her prayers and intercessions even in our day. She truly saw the glory of Christ in many of her experiences with Him before His three-year ministry, and “Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.” For example, 

  • The Events of Conception and words of Archangel Gabriel

  • The hymn of Elizabeth

  • His Birth with the star, wise men, angels, etc…

  • The Presentation in the Temple

  • The Flight into Egypt

  • The Destruction of the Temple of Tel Basta in Egypt

  • The Debate with the doctors when He was twelve

  • For sure, many more experiences

She also heard the prophetic words spoken to her from St. Simeon saying, “yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also…” Luke: 2:35. And “Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.” She knew that Christ’s mission would cause her great pain. Nevertheless, she initiated Christ’s three-year ministry, at the wedding of Cana, with Simeon’s words in mind, and the world would never be the same.  May we all have the courage of St. Mary! 

  • We hope to have vespers and veneration praises and hymns Wednesday (8/18/21) through Saturday (8/21/21) at St. Basil’s Church (7:00 PM – 8:00 PM).  Hymns will be followed by a small talk from a selection of special guest speakers! 

  • August has seen a rise in COVID cases in San Diego so please continue to be safe, especially if you are not vaccinated.

O strange and inconceivable thing! We did not really die, we were not really buried, we were not really crucified and raised again; but our imitation was in a figure, and our salvation in reality. Christ was actually crucified, and actually buried, and truly rose again; and all these things He has freely bestowed upon us, that we, sharing His sufferings by imitation, might gain salvation in reality. O surpassing loving-kindness! Christ received nails in His undefiled hands and feet, and suffered anguish; while on me without pain or toil by the fellowship of His suffering He freely bestows salvation.

WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP NIGHT!

Last Friday, the ladies had a wonderful gathering where a spiritual talk was given by Tasoni Mariana Maximous about prayer in our lives. Afterwards, everyone assembled a prayer rope for use in their daily life. Prayer requests were made and put in a box that later was put on the Altar during Sunday’s liturgy.  Finally, there was some amazing pot luck food which many brought to the meeting. God bless everyone who brought food, balloons, supplies, created the beautiful table center-pieces, and other efforts which made the night a huge success. For photos, click here. We will do that again soon for those who missed it!

JULY MESSAGE FROM FR. MICHAEL MAXIMOUS

Just yesterday, Americans gathered to celebrate Independence Day and this 4th of July marks the 245th birthday of the USA. It is a celebration of democracy, freedom from tyranny, the high standards of governance and this amazing country we live in. In the Declaration of Independence, it says:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

It is amazing how one sentence can be saturated with such meaning and depth. But this sentence can also mean different things to different people. What is true life, liberty and happiness? Did the authors mean that these rights should be obvious to everyone by saying that they are “self-evident”? In what way are all peoples equal? And what is meant by the mentioning of the “Creator”? I will leave you to ponder the meaning of these words from a Christian perspective!

Along with celebrating the birthday of America, we also commemorate the birthday of the Church (approximately 1,988 years ago) with the Fast of the Apostles which ends on July 12th (liturgy at 8:00 am).  In the lives of the apostles, we see the work of the Holy Spirit and a demonstration of the reality of Resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a reminder that we too strive to lead a life that allows the Holy Spirit to work in our lives and those around us, to ultimately point to, and as a proof of, the Resurrection of our Lord.

Also this month, 

  • We will be continuing the Men’s Meeting with an orthodox Christian review of CS Lewis’ book, “Mere Christianity”. The discussions thus far have been very interesting and lively so see below for more information!

  • On July 9th, we will be having a Women’s Fellowship night where there will be pot-luck food, fellowship, and a spiritual talk. Those attending will also make their own prayer rope to take home!  Be sure to RSVP (more information below).

  • The Sunday School servants will also be reaching out with summer activities for each class.

JUNE MESSAGE FROM FR. MICHAEL MAXIMOUS

Summer is here! As our angels finish up school, let’s remember to keep them busy this summer with healthy activities. Look for spiritually enriching and fun activities this summer from each of the Sunday school classes, especially as locations, such as parks, begin to open up!

With the goal of bringing the services of St. Basil’s to full throttle once more, please consider signing up for the many service opportunities. Yes, they are opportunities! Service is an opportunity to offer to God some of your time, energy, and talents to further our Lord’s work for the common salvation of everyone. Scripture is clear that this responsibility (and subsequent rewards) is for all who are eager and committed to doing so. 

  • “Exhorting one another daily while it is called To-day." (Heb. 3:13)

  • “Edify one another, even as also you do." (1 Thess. 5:11.) 

  • “Comfort one another with these words." (1 Thess. 4:18.)

  • "Bear you one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." (Gal. 6:2)

This is the way we will make the labor light for each other and much more successful and enjoyable, God willing. So “stretch out a hand”, as St. John Chrysostom says, “and becoming sharers and partakers, both in one another's salvation, and each one in his own.” The section below highlights many exciting opportunities to serve! Browse through them and see which one is right for you!

In other news:

  • After our recent online survey, 41% stated they would prefer a 6:00AM Wednesday Liturgy with 22% stating they were fine with either 6:00 or 8:00 AM. Only 16% preferred the 8:00 AM liturgy.  Therefore, the Wednesday liturgies will now be at 6:00 AM starting on Wednesday, June 16th. There will be no liturgy on June 9th.

  • Also this month, we will be starting our men’s in-person meeting with an Orthodox Christian review of CS Lewis’ book, “Mere Christianity”. The book is an excellent read and not to mention, we will have a special guest speaker on the first day, and great food! See below for more information. 

  • Also this month, there will be a women’s fellowship gathering as well, God willing, and more information will follow on this!

As we slowly re-open with activities, events and meetings at St. Basil’s, revitalizing the services will be a top priority! Did you know there are lots of services the church is in need of volunteers for? Our Lord Jesus Christ offers to us the best example for service offering Himself for our salvation. This often came in the face of weariness, hunger, and even extreme danger! When we serve, we share in the zeal of our Lord Jesus Christ who was wholly and entirely intent on the salvation of those who are called. We are also included in the continuity of service with all those who labored that came before us: the prophets, apostles, and church fathers and mothers and also share in their rewards! All Christians are called to serve in this apostolic ministry and to also share in the rewards!

And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. For in this the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.” John 4:36 -38

CONGRATULATIONS TO LINDSAY AND DANIEL!

Congratulations to Lindsay and Daniel who both received a Master’s Degree in Theological Studies on Saturday, May 15, 2021! Lindsay received her degree from Bethal University here in San Diego, CA. Daniel received his degree from St. Athanasius and St. Cyril Theological School (ACTS), which is part of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Southern California. Both members of our parish have worked extremely hard over the last few years to obtain such well-earned degrees. May God bless both of them to use such Christian education to the glory of His name and bring fruits therefrom thirtyfold, sixtyfold, and a hundredfold! And may many others be inspired to pursue and advance in greater Christian understanding.

 
 

NO REGISTRATION FOR LITURGIES!

God willing, as infection numbers continue to drop and for the time being, attendance at liturgies will NOT require registrations.  Those who so desire, can now attend every Sunday!  Progress in this phase will be monitored and adjusted as necessary.  If numbers should begin to rise again, registration may become necessary once more but we pray that that will not be the case.

For the time being, downstairs seating with streaming will still be available. Sunday school will be both in-person and through zoom, as we slowly transition to be fully in-person. Please be mindful that most youth have not been vaccinated yet. Therefore, please be encouraged to wear masks and remain socially distant as much as possible, while standing/sitting in the pews. If you have any questions, feel free to call Fr. Michael at 949-378-0350.

NO REGISTRATION FOR LITURGIES!

God willing, as infection numbers continue to drop and for the time being, attendance at liturgies will NOT require registrations. Those who so desire, can now attend every Sunday! Progress in this phase will be monitored and adjusted as necessary. If numbers should begin to rise again, registration may become necessary once more but we pray that that will not be the case.

Downstairs seating with streaming will still be available. Sunday school will be both in-person and through zoom, as we slowly transition to be fully in-person.

MAY 2021 MESSAGE FROM FR. MICHAEL

CHRIST IS RISEN! INDEED HE IS RISEN!

We thank our ever-victorious Lord Jesus Christ for allowing us to experience Holy Week and the Feast of the Resurrection inside the Church this year! As is still very fresh in many of our memories, last year’s commemoration of the most holy event on the Church Calendar was streamed and viewed on our screens at home. What a stark difference! It is a reminder that there is no substitute for gathering together in fellowship to worship our Lord inside the Church: to greet each other face-to-face (or at least mask-to-mask), to see and kiss the icons, to smell the incense, and to sing the hymns.  As the pandemic environment continues to improve, and we plan for a phased re-opening, let us remember the words of St. Paul who says:

Hebrews 10:24-25 || And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

We also want to thank all who gave their labor of love to make this year’s feast a great success: the deacons who tirelessly sung blessed hymns at all the holy week events, those who made food for the congregation, those who arranged flowers, those who cleaned and decorated the Church, those who set up chairs and tents, those who made sure we had streaming available, and all the others who gave their time and resources to make this year’s feast immensely enjoyable for all! God reward you all with every blessing!

God willing, this month, we will re-start the men’s book club meeting which will be kicked off with a barbeque! Also, as parks begin to open, a Church Picnic with food, games, and fun for the families will be coming up! We’ll keep you updated with more information on dates and times through this newsletter, texts, and on our website: stbasil.net.
