CONGRATULATIONS MARIO AND RAJAA!

Congratulations to Mario and Rajaa for the baptism of their daughter Leah!

But if any one wishes to know why the grace is given by water and not by a different element, let him take up the Divine Scriptures and he shall learn. For water is a grand thing, and the noblest of the four visible elements of the world. Heaven is the dwelling-place of Angels, but the heavens are from the waters: the earth is the place of men, but the earth is from the waters: and before the whole six days’ formation of the things that were made, the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the water (Gen. 1:2). The water was the beginning of the world, and Jordan (where Christ was baptized) the beginning of the Gospel tidings; for Israel deliverance from Pharaoh was through the sea, and for the world deliverance from sins by the washing of water with the word of God(Ephes. 5:26). Where a covenant is made with any, there is water also. After the flood, a covenant was made with Noah: a covenant for Israel from Mount Sinai, but with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop (Heb. 9:19). Elijah is taken up, but not apart from water: for first he crosses the Jordan, then in a chariot mounts the heaven. The high-priest is first washed, then offers incense;  for Aaron first washed, then was made high-priest: for how could one who had not yet been purified by water pray for the rest? Also as a symbol of Baptism there was a laver set apart within the Tabernacle. Baptism is the end of the Old Testament, and beginning of the New. The end he was of the Prophets: for all the Prophets and the law were until John (Matt. 11:13): but of the Gospel history he was also the first-fruit. For it says, The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ…John came baptizing in the wilderness” (Mark 1:1-4).  St. Cyril of Jerusalem-Catechetical Letters: Lecture 3, on Baptism

CONGRATULATIONS JULIANA AND ZOE!

Congratulations to Zoe and Juliana for receiving the blessing of joining the Ecclesiastical choir from Bishop Abraham during his visit on Sunday.  God bless your lives with the beauty praising our Lord Jesus Christ!

Nothing so arouses the soul, gives it wings, sets it free from the earth, releases it from the prison of the body, teaches it to love wisdom and to despise all the things of this life, as harmonious melody and sacred song composed in rhythm. — St. John Chrysostom (On Psalm 41)

What state can be more blessed than to imitate on earth the choruses of angels; to begin the day with prayer, and honor our Maker with hymns and songs? As the day brightens, to commit ourselves with prayer giving it attention throughout the day in our labors, and to season our work with hymns, as if with salt? Soothing hymns compose the mind to a cheerful and calm state. — St. Basil the Great (2nd Letter to St. Gregory)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

And Mary said:
        "My soul magnifies the Lord,
        And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
        For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant;
        For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
        For He who is mighty has done great things for me,
        And holy is His name.
        And His mercy is on those who fear Him
        From generation to generation.
        He has shown strength with His arm;
        He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
        He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
        And exalted the lowly.
        He has filled the hungry with good things,
        And the rich He has sent away empty.
        He has helped His servant Israel,
        In remembrance of His mercy,
        As He spoke to our fathers,
        To Abraham and to his seed forever."

Luke 1:46-55

Then to Him was given dominion and glory and the Kingdom that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His Kingdom the one which shall not be destroyed."

Care Packages Ready!

Thank you to everyone who helped make this service possible. The High School and Jr. High School classes worked together to prepare 150 care packages to provide to our homeless brothers and sisters this season. It wouldn’t have been possible without the help of so many of St. Basil’s members who provided financial support to purchase the contents or to actually purchase them from the store and bring them assembly! God bless all who participated in this successful event! If you would like to help in distributing them, you can grab a few in the main hall downstairs.

God repose the soul of our brother Ramy in the paradise of joy and grant Ramy’s family the comfort and assurance that only Christ can provide!

Thank You Metropolitan Serapion!

We thank His Eminence Metropolitan Serapion for his visit on Sunday and attending the liturgy at St. Basil’s!   May our ever-victorious Lord Jesus Christ grant him many years and peaceful times for the glory of His name.

Also congratulations to Emmanuel, Nicholas, Nathan, and Jeremiah for being ordained chanters and for Hannah who received the blessing of becoming a deaconess!  God bless your service for many years to come!
