QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"Fasting is the champion of every virtue, the beginning of the struggle, the crown of the abstinent, the beauty of virginity and sanctity, the resplendence of chastity, the commencement of the path of Christianity, the mother of prayer, the well-spring of sobriety and prudence, the teacher of stillness, and the precursor of all good works."
-St Isaac the Syrian

ST. MARY'S FAST
The fast for the Holy Virgin Mary began on Monday, August 7th. The Feast of the Assumption is on Tuesday, 22 August. In honor of our beloved Theotokos during this special fast, we will be hosting nightly veneration services. May her intercessions be with us all.
CONGRATS TO OUR YOUTH
Congratulations to all of our youth who participated in Mahagran and YSC! We are proud to announce that our jr. high and 1st/2nd grade classes both received "excellent", and then Pre-K/Kindergarten and 3rd/4th grade classes received "good." Additionally, we're thrilled to announce that Bella Farah was a finalist in the photography competition, and Carla Kelliny placed second! To round it off, our parish won "Best T-Shirt Design"! A huge congratulations to all of our youth and a warm thank you to all the servants who helped prepare them.
SAVE THE DATE - CHURCH BBQ
In celebration of our parish's 3 year anniversary, we will be having a BBQ potluck on Saturday, August 26th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Powerhouse Park in Del Mar. Please mark it down on your calendars so our entire parish family can spend the day together! Please bring a main or side dish to share; dessert will be provided. More details to follow! If you have questions on what to bring, or want to help out, please contact Mina Said at (559) 280-1825.
SAVE THE DATE - PARISH MEETING
We will be having a parish meeting on Sunday, August 27th, immediately following the Divine Liturgy. As several important topics will be discussed, Abouna has asked everyone to do their best to be present. For those unable to be present, a summary will be provided in that week's newsletter and on St. Basil's Facebook page.
SAVE THE DATE - ANNUAL PARISH RETREAT
Just a heads up that our annual St. Basil's parish retreat will be held January 12th-14th, 2018. That means you've got 5 months to make sure you save that weekend in your calendars so our parish family can spend a weekend of fun, fellowship, and edification together!
ABOUNA ANTONY'S CONTACT INFO
Please remember that Abouna Antony has a separate phone number set up for those of us at St. Basil's, to help him keep on top of important news and requests from his parishioners. We should be texting and calling him at that number to help him keep track of his messages. He can be reached at (858) 707-5520.
ANNOUNCEMENTS, VISITATIONS & CONFESSIONS
Please let us know if you have any upcoming important events for us to share with our fellow congregants. Special events are best shared amongst our family, and we encourage you to send an email to info@stbasil.net to share your special news. In addition, if you would like to schedule a time for a visit or confession with Father Antony Paul, please email priest@stbasil.net or approach him after the Liturgy on Sunday.
FOOD & CLEAN-UP
To sign up to bring food for the agape meal on Sundays, please fill in the weekly spreadsheet available HERE. We need as many volunteers as possible to keep the church clean on Sundays after the Divine Liturgy. Please consider this important expression of stewardship.
