Quote of the Week

“The Lord did not come to make a display. He came to heal and to teach suffering men. For one who wanted to make a display the thing would have been just to appear and dazzle the beholders. But for Him Who came to heal and to teach the way was not merely to dwell here, but to put Himself at the disposal of those who needed Him, and to be manifested according as they could bear it, not vitiating the value of the Divine appearing by exceeding their capacity to receive it.”
+St. Athanasius

St. Demetrius of Thessalonica, commemorated 8 November/29 Paope

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Once, the holy Fathers of the Egyptian Scetis were talking prophetically about the last generation.
“What have we done?” they said.
One of them, the great Abba Ischyrion, replied, “We have carried out the commandments of God.”
They asked him, “What will those who come after us do?”
Abba replied, “They will do half as much as we have done.”
Again they asked him, “And what will those who come after them do?”
Abba Ischyrion replied, “They will not have any monastic activity whatever, but they will be permitted to have troubles and afflictions, and those who persevere will be superior to us and our fathers.”

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

The brothers asked an elder, “How is it that God in the Scriptures promises good things to the soul, and yet the soul does not desire them, but instead turn aside to impurity?” And he answered and said to them, “It is my opinion that it is because that soul has not yet tasted the good things which are above, and therefore the good things which are here [on earth] are dear to it.”

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"As thou takest thy seat at table, pray. As thou liftest the loaf, offer thanks to the Giver. When thou sustainest thy bodily weakness with wine, remember Him Who supplies thee with this gift, to make thy heart glad and to comfort thy infirmity. Has thy need for taking food passed away? Let not the thought of thy Benefactor pass away too. As thou art putting on thy tunic, thank the Giver of it. As thou wrappest thy cloak about thee, feel yet greater love to God, Who alike in summer and in winter has given us coverings convenient for us, at once to preserve our life, and to cover what is unseemly. Is the day done? Give thanks to Him Who has given us the sun for our daily work, and has provided for us a fire to light up the night, and to serve the rest of the needs of life. Let night give the other occasion of prayer. When thou lookest up to heaven and gazest at the beauty of the stars, pray to the Lord of the visible world; pray to God the Arch-artificer of the universe, Who in wisdom hath made them all. ”

St. Basil the Great, Prolegomena

HAIL TO THE CROSS!

Peace and grace, PARISHIONERS!

A blessed Feast of the Cross to you and your family. Christ was Crucified and conquered death!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

For instance, to take the first and most general example, who is thence who has taught us in writing to sign with the sign of the cross those who have trusted in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ?  What writing has taught us to turn to the East at the prayer?  Which of the saints has left us in writing the words of the invocation at the displaying of the bread of the Eucharist and the cup of blessing?  For we are not, as is well known, content with what the apostle or the Gospel has recorded, but both in preface and conclusion we add other words as being of great importance to the validity of the ministry, and these we derive from unwritten teaching.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"I know Him, and with faith I transcend. He was born God of the Father, and I know Him to be born man from the Virgin. I see Him walking as a man on earth and behold to heavenly Angels as God. I envisage Him sleeping in the ship as a man and He himself walks on the water as God. As a human He experiences hunger, and as God He feeds. He, as human, was stoned by the Jews and He himself is worshipped by the Angels as God. He was tempted as a human, but expels devils as God....I confess He is one; while He Himself is
God and Savior, he became man because of His goodness..."

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"The Light of the Transfiguration of the Lord is not something that comes to be and then vanishes, nor is it subject to the sensory faculties, although it was contemplated by corporeal eyes for a short while upon an inconsequential mountaintop. But the initiates of the Mystery, (the disciples) of the Lord at this time passed beyond mere flesh into spirit through a transformation of their senses, effectualized within them by the Spirit, and in such a way that they beheld what, and to what extent, the Divine Spirit had wrought blessedness in them to behold the Ineffable Light."

WEBSITE & HYMNS

We encourage all congregants to take some time to check out the parish website:

holycross-orthodox.org

All are also encouraged to listen to the liturgical hymns as they are chanted at Holy Cross please click here.

FOOD & CLEAN-UP

To sign up to bring food for the agape meal on Sundays please see the bulletin board at church or contact Tasoni Maryann. We need as many volunteers as possible to keep the church clean on Sundays after the Divine Liturgy. Please consider this important expression of stewardship.

May God bless and reward all of you who have so diligently offered food and helped to clean!
