QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Blessed is God! In our time as well martyrs have come forth, and we have been made worthy to see people sacrificed for the Lord Christ, people who shed their holy blood to irrigate the entire Church. We have been made worthy to see people, advocates of piety, who are victorious, who are crowned … and we now have these crowned ones among us.

FEAST OF THE NAYROUZ (COPTIC NEW YEAR)

Martyrs.jpg

Tuesday is the beginning of the blessed Coptic year. It is necessary to keep it a holy day with full purity and chastity. Let us start a new demeanor as St. Paul the Apostle says, "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation." (2 Cor. 5:17-18). We ask our God to keep us without sin and help us to act according to His will with the intercessions of the pure Saint Mary, all the Martyrs and Saints.

Feast of the assumption

On August 22nd (16 Misra), we celebrate the assumption of the body of our pure Lady Saint Mary, the Mother of God. August 22 also marks the end of the fast of Saint Mary. While Saint Mary was keeping vigil, praying in the Holy Sepulcher, and waiting for the happy minute of her liberation from the bonds of the flesh, the Holy Spirit informed her of her forthcoming departure from this vain world. Christ and the Twelve Disciples

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

The Lord chose the Apostles, that they should be with Him, and that he might send them forth to preach, and to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils.

Every Christian is chosen—chosen for similar deeds, namely: to be with the Lord, through unceasing remembrance of Him and awareness of His omnipresence, through the preaching and fulfillment of His commandments, and through a readiness to confess one’s faith in Him. In those circles where such a confession is made, it is a loud sermon for all to hear.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"When fasting, you should fast both in body and heart; abstaining from
meat, gossip and slander...The fasting tongue is better than the
fasting stomach, and when the heart abstains from wrath, that is
better than both."

— St. Kyrillos VI

GREAT LENT

As we continue in the Holy and Great Fast, it is important that each of us receives spiritual guidance with regards to how to fast. Abouna Antony has emailed a recommended program for the fast; please ensure you receive guidance from your own spiritual father. Lent is a time of asceticism and self-control; a time for modesty in all that we do. We prepare for the most holy time of the year, where we remember our Lord's agony, death, and far more importantly: resurrection. The life of the Church is is important, we want to live in and with Christ, and this fast helps us bring our whole spiritual life under review.

VISIT FROM THE METROPOLITAN

We are blessed to have His Eminence Serapion joining us for Liturgy this Sunday! Please join us for Liturgy and the agape meal following so we can all take the blessing of praying and fellowshipping together with him!

FOCUS SAN DIEGO

Join volunteers from Orthodox parishes in San Diego every Wednesday to serve with FOCUS to help provide meals for the hungry at 1625 Island Ave., San Diego, CA 92101. Help is needed with cooking, serving, and clean up from 3:00 p.m. onwards. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Jensen.

In addition, if you would like to schedule a time for a visit or confession with Father Antony Paul, please email him or approach him after the Liturgy on Sunday.
