CONGRATULATIONS TO CYPRUS “MICHAEL” BURKE

Congratulations to Hayden and Alicia Burke for the baptism of their son Cyprus “Michael” Burke!  God grant you every blessing

Let us say again: Blessed be God, who alone does wonderful things, who does all things and transforms them. Before yesterday you were captives, but now you are free and citizens of the Church; lately you lived in the shame of your sins, but now you live in freedom and justice.

  • You are not only free , but also holy;

  • not only holy, but also just;

  • not only just but also sons;

  • not only sons, but also heirs;

  • not only heirs, but also brothers of Christ;

  • not only brothers of Christ, but also joint heirs;

  • not only joint heirs, but also members;

  • not only members, but also the temple;

  • not only the temple, but also instruments of the Spirit.

You have seen how numerous the gifts of baptism are although many think that the only gift it confers is the remission of sins.  It is on this account that we baptize even infants, although they are sinless, that they may be given the further gifts sanctification, justice, filial adoption, and inheritance, that they may be brothers and members of Christ, and become dwelling places for the Spirit.

~St. John Chrysostom- 4th Century

BLESSED FEAST OF THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD

On January 7, we celebrate the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Incarnate God in the Flesh from the virgin St. Mary. Let us direct our minds toward the manger of Bethlehem, where the Son of God was lying in it in the flesh at the time of His birth, contemplating in silence and reverence worthy of the mystery of the incarnation of God, and His birth in a manger for our salvation. Knowing that He teaches us through this mystery to despise the world and all the vain things in it, and that He urges us to be humble and to love our neighbor seeking his own good, and that we should live in virtue and holiness according to the Christian ethics; not ignoring the great dignity that has been granted to us by this Divine Incarnation. May God grant us many returns of this feast, filled with the blessings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Who came for our salvation.

NATIVITY FAST STARTED NOV 25

November 25th marked the beginning of the fast of the Nativity (the Advent) in our Coptic Church. To benefit from this holy time, we have mailed you a famous book titled “On the Incarnation”. Please read this book by St. Athanasius which is a tradition among many to read during the Nativity Fast.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Commemoration of the Entrance of Saint Mary into the Temple of Jerusalem (Dec 12/ Kiak 3)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

And Mary said:
"My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant;
For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
For He who is mighty has done great things for me,
And holy is His name.
And His mercy is on those who fear Him
From generation to generation.
He has shown strength with His arm;
He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
And exalted the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
And the rich He has sent away empty.
He has helped His servant Israel,
In remembrance of His mercy,
As He spoke to our fathers,
To Abraham and to his seed forever."

Lk 1:46-55

The State of California has designated San Diego County in the “Purple Tier which means there have been spikes in Covid-19 infections in the region. Consequently, we will be transitioning back to outdoor liturgies starting Sunday (November 15th). We pray that this temporary situation is short lived and we can return back inside the church soon. Of course, outdoor liturgies will be dependent on the weather (rain, cold, etc..). Updates will be texted to all the beloved Congregation members.

  • Please continue to register for liturgies as we have been doing for the last few months.

  • If you would like the blessing of coming early to help set up the tents and chairs, please arrive at 7:45.

  • Thank you all for your patience and resilience during this process!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”

THE COPTIC PRAYER BOOK OF HOURS - WORSHIP GOD IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH

Join us every week night at 7:00 PM to pray the 11th Hour Agpeya prayers.  This prayer takes less than 15 minutes and would be great for you and the family to join. Click here to join or visit StBasil.net anytime for the easy-to-use link!

 Scripture is clear that we are to call upon God on a regular basis for our own benefit and peace.

  • Jeremiah 33:3 - Call to me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

  • Ephesians 6:18 - Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

  • Colossians 4:2 - Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving

  • Matthew 7:7 - Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

The Coptic prayer book called the Agpeya in Coptic (Book of Hours) or Horologion (Greek for hours), is an essential part of Coptic Orthodox Christian spirituality.  The Agpeya aims to prolonging our presence with our Lord and raising our concentration and feelings to higher levels of prayer which should not be done as a duty or routine, but from the heart and spirit. The Agpeya is full of many psalms written by David the Prophet, sections from scripture written by the Disciples and Apostles, and prayers of saintly fathers (litanies), which they all wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.  There are no other words better than the words of God to speak to God with. When we use the Agpeya, we feel the same feelings they felt and we have the opportunity to make their powerful prayers our own. They are a model and guide for us in our own personal prayers.

The hours are chronologically laid out, containing a theme corresponding to events in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ, as shown below.  Try to use it today, even one or two of the “hours” which takes less than 15 minutes each.

REMINDER ABOUT LITURGY REGISTRATIONS

A reminder to only register once for a liturgy for each cycle so as to make sure everyone has a chance to take communion during each of the three-week cycles.  If you wish to attend more than one liturgy during each cycle, there are a few ways you can do so:

  • Sign up on the waiting list.  If there are cancellations, we will release tickets as seats become available.  Preference will be given to those who have not signed up for a liturgy during the current cycle.

  • Check availability after 7:00 PM Saturday nights.  If there is an opening, even if you have signed up for other liturgies during that cycle, please sign up again.

  • Attend weekday liturgies as they occur for feasts and as they are announced.  Attendance at these liturgies is expected to be well below our maximum COVID19 occupancy guidelines.

  • Thank you all for your patience and cooperation and we look forward to the day, through your prayers with the grace of Jesus Christ, that these restrictions will no longer be necessary.

BLESSED FEAST OF THE CROSS

On the 17th Tout in the year 326AD we remember for three days the discovery of the cross by Queen Helen. At the center of our Christian life is the sacrifice of the Cross when God the Father offered his only Son for the salvation and redemption of mankind. As such the true meaning of the Cross is sacrificial love, from here comes its true power in the life of the believer. May the blessings of the Holy Feast of the Cross be with us.
