BLESSED FEAST OF NAYROUZ

September 11 marks the beginning of the Coptic New Year. It is a time dedicated to remembering the martyrs. By remembering the many thousands of martyrs we celebrate their victory and give them the appropriate degree of honor in our lives. The New Year is also a time for reflection and new beginnings - having the martyrs at the forefront of our minds allows us the highest possible example when setting our spiritual aspirations for the coming year remembering our first love is for Our Lord and not this world. We wish everyone a blessed feast.

CONGRATULATIONS LINDSAY & JOHN!

Congratulations to Lindsay and John for uniting in Holy Matrimony on August 29, 2020!   God bless their new journey together!

August 25 || BOOK CLUB

41HGSQa3MYL.jpg

Come join us online on Tuesdays for a review of “Interior Freedom” by Jacques Philippe. Books can be purchased through Amazon by clicking here. Below is a description of the book and which is very appropriate with the challenges we are facing today:

Interior Freedom leads one to discover that even in the most difficult circumstances we possess within ourselves a space of freedom that nobody can take away, because God is its source and guarantee. Without this discovery we will always be restricted in some way and will never taste true happiness. Author Jacques Philippe develops a simple but important theme: we gain possession of our interior freedom in exact proportion to our growth in faith, hope, and love. He explains that the dynamism between these three theological virtues is the heart of the spiritual life, and he underlines the key role of the virtue of hope in our inner growth.

August 4 || BOOK CLUB

COVID-19 UPDATE AND TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF LITURGIES

image3.jpg

As the number of COVID-19 cases is increasing and with newly published guidelines from the State of California, effective immediately, Liturgies at St. Basil’s, as well as throughout the diocese churches, will be put on hold for at least two weeks.

  • In two weeks, the issue will be re-evaluated and announcements will be made accordingly.

  • Sunday morning scripture readings and sermon will be conducted until liturgies and streaming begins once more.  Please visit StBasil.net regularly for more information.

  • The liturgy sign-up ticketing system through Eventbrite will be canceled for now and re-advertised when it is appropriate to do so.

It has been a difficult time for everyone with this issue affecting both our spiritual and civic life. Let this be an opportunity to further reinforce the need for churches at home. Dedicate to the Lord physical space in your homes (prayer and reading corners) as well as space in our schedules to pray and read with our families and with our own selves. Also continue to participate in the Church’s online programs such as weekday Vespers prayers at 7:00 PM, book studies on Tuesday nights at 7:45 PM (see below) and Sunday morning readings and sermon at 11:00 AM.  Other services will be announced as we progress. Thank you for your patience, cooperation and prayers.

**IMPORTANT –PLEASE READ*** || COVID-19 UPDATE AND PROTOCOLS

image3.jpg

We have begun to see an increase in the numbers of COVID-19 cases within the Diocese and even members of our blessed congregation have contracted the virus. Our prayers are with those who have tested positive for the virus and those on the front lines caring for the sick. For the safety of yourself and those around PLEASE, be mindful of the following:

  1. If you have been in contact with anyone that has been infected and/or tested positive, even if no symptoms are observed, kindly do not come to any of the church services until:

    • You are tested negative FOR TWO CONSECUTIVE TESTS; irrespective of the time it takes for them to be tested negative twice.

    • Those whom have been in contact with you, including close family members, are tested negative FOR TWO CONSECUTIVE TESTS; irrespective of the time it takes for them to be tested negative twice.

  2. If you, or anyone you know, have attended church services and have tested positive for the virus a few days later, please inform Fr. Michael who will let those who attended the same services know so that they can also be tested. Identities will be kept confidential. Please see No. 1 above regarding attendance at church services.

  3. Members of other churches should not attend St. Basil church services. This rule has been in place early during this epidemic and it is more important that we follow this rule now.

Also, please note that Fr. Michael, or any clergy in the diocese, has to follow the same rules as noted above. This includes refraining from conducting liturgies and being tested if he is in contact with anyone infected with the virus. This can be for several weeks until he is able to be tested negative twice.

Thank you in advance for following these rules to keep everyone as protected as possible with the current situation.  Please contact Fr. Michael if you have any concerns. May our ever-victorious Lord Jesus Christ protect and keep you all safe and healthy.

REGISTRATION FOR LIMITED LITURGIES

image2.jpg

We have started the third cycle of registration for the limited liturgies at St. Basil’s with a slight change in the method of registration. In order to provide for greater convenience with everyone’s schedule, and to avoid cancellations of reservations which could be used for others, a ticketing system has been created. This should be a much easier format. Simply browse the available spots and choose a Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday liturgy to attend. This current cycle was from July 1st through July 12th. You will receive a text once each cycle begins so you can choose a liturgy most convenient for you.

Some other thoughts to remember:

  • If possible, please choose Wednesday to provide room for others who can only attend on Saturdays or Sundays.

  • Please choose only one ticket per household during each cycle which will be approximately two weeks (or six liturgies).

  • Please coordinate/communicate with your wife/husband so that only one ticket is chosen.

  • If you want to attend more than one liturgy per cycle, at 7:00 pm before each liturgy, if there are still tickets available for the liturgy on the following day, you may obtain an additional ticket regardless if you have registered previously for tickets.

  • If you cannot make it, please give as much notice as possible so your ticket can be available for someone else.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we try to provide for the Holy Eucharist (essential for our salvation) with a safe and equitable process.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Fr. Michael directly at 949-378-0350.

BLESSED FEAST OF PENTECOST

On this day, the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples as tongues of fire, through which they were able to speak in different tongues and preach the news entrusted to them by our Lord Jesus Christ. This gift is the promise of the Father to the human race. After the Son reconciled the Father with the human race by giving Himself up as a sacrifice on the Holy Cross, and after giving our human body the capability of living with God through His Ascension, God the Father poured on us the grace and blessings of the Holy Spirit, allowing us to live by the Spirit with God while we’re still on earth.

May the blessings of this feast be with us all. Amen.

THE APOSTLES’ FAST || JUNE 8 - JULY 11

On Monday, June 8 we start the Apostles’ Fast - a fast of thanksgiving to God for the gifts of the Holy Spirit that the Apostles received. It served a purpose of preparing them for the service of preaching to the world. May the blessing of the fast and feasts of the Apostles be with us, strengthen us, and establish us in Christ. Amen.

ONLINE SERVICES FOR COVID-19 SHELTER-IN

During these unprecedented times, we believe that it's more important than ever that we all continue to receive spiritual nourishment. While we may not be able to attend church in person, we hope that we can grow and strengthen the churches within our homes.

Therefore, we have set up a series of online video sessions for both prayer and spiritual edification, so that you and your family can join from your home.

All events can be found here: http://stbasil.net/covid19-services

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN || “LITTLE FLOCK” LESSONS

For our children in elementary school, the Diocese plans to have weekly Sunday school lessons live on Logos TV on Sunday evenings at 4:00 PM. These lessons are provided by some of the best servants in the Diocese. The first series of three weeks will focus on God as our refuge and fortress (Psa. 91:2). The final week will be a wonderful overview of Holy Pascha week for our children.

These lessons will include lessons from the Bible with visuals, application and memory verse memorization, arts and crafts, puppet shows, and much more. We hope this can engage our children during this time. We also hope that parents can watch along side their children, to ask questions to make sure they are retaining and applying the information in their lives.
