ONLINE SERVICES FOR COVID-19 SHELTER-IN

During these unprecedented times, we believe that it's more important than ever that we all continue to receive spiritual nourishment. While we may not be able to attend church in person, we hope that we can grow and strengthen the churches within our homes.

Therefore, we have set up a series of online video sessions for both prayer and spiritual edification, so that you and your family can join from your home.

All events can be found here: http://stbasil.net/covid19-services

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN || “LITTLE FLOCK” LESSONS

For our children in elementary school, the Diocese plans to have weekly Sunday school lessons live on Logos TV on Sunday evenings at 4:00 PM. These lessons are provided by some of the best servants in the Diocese. The first series of three weeks will focus on God as our refuge and fortress (Psa. 91:2). The final week will be a wonderful overview of Holy Pascha week for our children.

These lessons will include lessons from the Bible with visuals, application and memory verse memorization, arts and crafts, puppet shows, and much more. We hope this can engage our children during this time. We also hope that parents can watch along side their children, to ask questions to make sure they are retaining and applying the information in their lives.

HOLY WEEK ONLINE SERVICES

As we start the holiest week of the year and final week of lent, take an opportunity to prepare your home for the spiritual journey ahead.

Under the care of His Eminence Metropolitan Serapion, the diocese has prepared a full schedule of live online Holy Week services including the Lazarus Saturday, Palm Sunday, all of Holy Week morning and evening Pascha praises and scripture readings, Covenant Thursday, Good Friday, Apocalypse Night Prayers, and of course the Resurrection Liturgy.

To view the live services:

  • Visit www.lacopts.org

  • Click on the Saint Mary Saint Verena Live Stream video for the English services

  • You can always check the schedule for the next service, and add reminders to your phone's calendar, from our website: https://stbasil.net/covid19-services

To help you follow along and benefit from these Holy Week services, we recommend that you download the Coptic Reader app for your device (iPhone/iPadAndroid).

Please try your best to follow and pray along these services. Light candles, turn off all other devices, gather the family and open the book/app and follow along in the prayers. Though nothing can be a substitute for actually being in the church during this time, there is still a great opportunity to receive the spirit and blessings of Holy Week, but this time in our homes.

May you have a blessed Holy Week with your families in your homes until the time when we can see each other face-to-face in the church.

Commemoration of the Departure of the Great Prophet Daniel (April 1 / Baramhat 26)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?”

CANCELLATION || GRADUATES & YOUNG PROFESSIONALS 11TH ANNUAL LENTEN RETREAT

In recent weeks, the world has witnessed the global spread of the COVID-19 virus. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the GYP Committee, with the guidance of His Eminence Metropolitan Serapion and His Grace Bishop Kyrillos, will regretfully cancel the upcoming GYP Lenten Retreat.

We are saddened that we will not have Lenten Retreat this year, however we must keep in mind that we each have a civic duty and responsibility to our community to do what is best for everyone’s safety and health. God willing, we plan on hosting a spiritual day in the near future.

For those who have registered and paid, please allow 5-7 business days to receive a refund of your payment.

Thank you for your understanding in these extraordinary times. We pray you have a blessed Lent and remain in good health.

Wishing the congregation of St. Basil’s a blessed lent full of spiritual revival and fruitful fasting.  Fasting allows us to remember that this is a sacred time which is devoted to God.  It is a time when God’s presence is very visible in your behavior. Fasting enlightens and trains our mind, body and spirit towards the Christian lifestyle of “holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.” (Heb 12:14).

GREAT LENT HAS STARTED

As we begin the Holy and Great Fast, it is important that each of us receives spiritual guidance with regards to how to fast - please ensure you receive guidance from your spiritual father. Lent is a time of asceticism and self-control; a time for modesty in all that we do. We prepare for the most holy time of the year, where we remember our Lord's agony, death, and far more importantly: resurrection.

Feast of Nineveh (February 13 / Amshir 5)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

I write to you, little children,
Because your sins are forgiven you for His name's sake.
        I write to you, fathers,
Because you have known Him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
Because you have overcome the wicked one.
I write to you, little children,
Because you have known the Father.
I have written to you, fathers,
Because you have known Him who is from the beginning.
I have written to you, young men,
Because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you,
And you have overcome the wicked one.
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

FEBRUARY 10-12 || NINEVEH’S FAST

And when we examine the story of Jonah, great is the force of the resemblance. Jesus was sent to preach repentance; Jonah also was sent: but whereas the one fled, not knowing what should come to pass; the other came willingly, to give repentance unto salvation. Jonah was asleep in the ship, and snoring amidst the stormy sea;while Jesus also slept, the sea, according to God's providence, began to rise, to show in the sequel the might of Him who slept. To the one they said, "Why are you sleeping? Arise, call you're your God, that God may save us;" but in the other case they say unto the Master, "Lord, save us." Then, they said, Call upon thy God; here they say, save Thou. But the one says, Take me, and cast me into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you; the other, Himself rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. The one was cast into a whale's belly: but the other of His own accord went down,
where the invisible whale of death is. And He went down of His own accord, that death might cast up those whom he had devoured, according to that which is written, I will ransom them from the power of the grave; and from the hand of death I will redeem them.

Please save the date for our Theophany Liturgy on January 20th at 8:00 a.m.

If the Epiphany Feast falls on a Monday, as it does this year, then the Paramon abstinence day is substituted with the Friday before, since Saturday and Sunday are non-abstaining days. In this case, the Paramon Fast is considered as the three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with only Friday as a Paramon abstinence day. This is the only case where a third previous day is included in the Paramon Fast.

Commemoration of the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ (January 8 / Kiahk 29)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him."

When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

So they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet:
"But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
        Are not the least among the rulers of Judah;
For out of you shall come a Ruler
Who will shepherd My people Israel."'

Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also."

When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.

Matt 2:1-12

NATIVITY FAST

November 26th marked the beginning of the fast of the Nativity (the Advent) in our Coptic Church. Fasting is not just about changing ingredients; it should be a real spiritual discipline with goals. You are encouraged to take the discipline seriously and to consult with your spiritual father for an appropriate prescription for your fasting period, as well as what spiritual disciplines to partake of during this blessed time. For more information on how and why we fast before nativity, click here.

DECEMBER 14 || PREPARATION FOR BAPTISM (CATUCHEMEN) CLASSES

Come join us on Saturday nights at 6:30 PM (after the Vespers Prayers) for Baptism preparation classes. These classes are for those interested in becoming members of the Coptic Orthodox Church, for those recently baptized (within the last few years), or simply for anyone else seeking to better understand the basics of the Christian Faith. Together, we will review the importance of baptism and its impact, the Sacraments, the inspiring church history, the Orthodox Creed, the Holy Bible, Orthodox Prayer and Spiritual life, and Church traditions.

Reading material will be provided for those who wish to attend.

DECEMBER 15 || HIGH SCHOOL AND JR. HIGH CHRISTMAS CAROLING

Time to warm up those vocal cords for a trip to a Senior Center in Rancho Bernardo to sing Christmas carols! We will be serenading the residents from 2-3 pm. A Starbucks run may be in order before heading back to church! Note that the center can accommodate up to 40 of us so bring your family and friends! Please confirm your attendance, so we can arrange transportation. Feel free to reach out to any of the High School Servants with any questions.
