JUNE MESSAGE FROM FR. MICHAEL MAXIMOUS

Summer is here! As our angels finish up school, let’s remember to keep them busy this summer with healthy activities. Look for spiritually enriching and fun activities this summer from each of the Sunday school classes, especially as locations, such as parks, begin to open up!

With the goal of bringing the services of St. Basil’s to full throttle once more, please consider signing up for the many service opportunities. Yes, they are opportunities! Service is an opportunity to offer to God some of your time, energy, and talents to further our Lord’s work for the common salvation of everyone. Scripture is clear that this responsibility (and subsequent rewards) is for all who are eager and committed to doing so.

  • “Exhorting one another daily while it is called To-day." (Heb. 3:13)

  • “Edify one another, even as also you do." (1 Thess. 5:11.)

  • “Comfort one another with these words." (1 Thess. 4:18.)

  • "Bear you one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." (Gal. 6:2)

This is the way we will make the labor light for each other and much more successful and enjoyable, God willing. So “stretch out a hand”, as St. John Chrysostom says, “and becoming sharers and partakers, both in one another's salvation, and each one in his own.” The section below highlights many exciting opportunities to serve! Browse through them and see which one is right for you!

In other news:

  • After our recent online survey, 41% stated they would prefer a 6:00AM Wednesday Liturgy with 22% stating they were fine with either 6:00 or 8:00 AM. Only 16% preferred the 8:00 AM liturgy.  Therefore, the Wednesday liturgies will now be at 6:00 AM starting on Wednesday, June 16th. There will be no liturgy on June 9th.

  • Also this month, we will be starting our men’s in-person meeting with an Orthodox Christian review of CS Lewis’ book, “Mere Christianity”. The book is an excellent read and not to mention, we will have a special guest speaker on the first day, and great food! See below for more information.

  • Also this month, there will be a women’s fellowship gathering as well, God willing, and more information will follow on this!

Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen!

Fr. Michael Maximous

MEN’S BOOK-STUDY MEETING

GET INVOLVED!

As we slowly re-open with activities, events and meetings at St. Basil’s, revitalizing the services will be a top priority! Did you know there are lots of services the church is in need of volunteers for? Our Lord Jesus Christ offers to us the best example for service offering Himself for our salvation. This often came in the face of weariness, hunger, and even extreme danger! When we serve, we share in the zeal of our Lord Jesus Christ who was wholly and entirely intent on the salvation of those who are called. We are also included in the continuity of service with all those who labored that came before us: the prophets, apostles, and church fathers and mothers and also share in their rewards! All Christians are called to serve in this apostolic ministry and to also share in the rewards!

And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. For in this the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.” John 4:36 -38

Consider getting involved! Visit St. Basil’s Welcome Portal and click on “Register as a volunteer” to explore the many options and ways to serve. You can also submit other areas of service that you would like to commit to. God bless your efforts with every heavenly and earthly blessing!

Entry of the Lord into Egype (June 1 / Bashons 24)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”

CONGRATULATIONS TO LINDSAY AND DANIEL!

Congratulations to Lindsay and Daniel who both received a Master’s Degree in Theological Studies on Saturday, May 15, 2021! Lindsay received her degree from Bethal University here in San Diego, CA. Daniel received his degree from St. Athanasius and St. Cyril Theological School (ACTS), which is part of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Southern California. Both members of our parish have worked extremely hard over the last few years to obtain such well-earned degrees. May God bless both of them to use such Christian education to the glory of His name and bring fruits therefrom thirtyfold, sixtyfold, and a hundredfold! And may many others be inspired to pursue and advance in greater Christian understanding.

NO REGISTRATION FOR LITURGIES!

God willing, as infection numbers continue to drop and for the time being, attendance at liturgies will NOT require registrations.  Those who so desire, can now attend every Sunday!  Progress in this phase will be monitored and adjusted as necessary.  If numbers should begin to rise again, registration may become necessary once more but we pray that that will not be the case.

For the time being, downstairs seating with streaming will still be available. Sunday school will be both in-person and through zoom, as we slowly transition to be fully in-person. Please be mindful that most youth have not been vaccinated yet. Therefore, please be encouraged to wear masks and remain socially distant as much as possible, while standing/sitting in the pews. If you have any questions, feel free to call Fr. Michael at 949-378-0350.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PUAL AND ASHLEY WEBER!

Congratulations to Paul and Ashley Weber for the baptism of their son Wolfgang “BASIL” Weber on Friday, May 14, 2021!  God bless your lives with the work of the Holy Spirit and continuous newness of life in Jesus Christ.

“Through the Holy Spirit (in the waters of Baptism) comes our restoration to Paradise, our ascension to the Kingdom of heaven, our adoption as God’s sons, our freedom to call God our Father, our becoming partakers of the grace of Christ, being called children of light, sharing in eternal glory, and in a word, our inheritance of the fullness of blessing, both in this world and the world to come.  Even while we wait for the full enjoyment of the good things in store for us, by the Holy Spirit we are able to rejoice through faith in the promise of the graces to come.  If the promise itself is so glorious, what must its fulfillment be like?” ~St. Basil the Great – On the Holy Spirit

Rom 1:16-17

MAY 2021 MESSAGE FROM FR. MICHAEL

CHRIST IS RISEN! INDEED HE IS RISEN!

We thank our ever-victorious Lord Jesus Christ for allowing us to experience Holy Week and the Feast of the Resurrection inside the Church this year! As is still very fresh in many of our memories, last year’s commemoration of the most holy event on the Church Calendar was streamed and viewed on our screens at home. What a stark difference! It is a reminder that there is no substitute for gathering together in fellowship to worship our Lord inside the Church: to greet each other face-to-face (or at least mask-to-mask), to see and kiss the icons, to smell the incense, and to sing the hymns.  As the pandemic environment continues to improve, and we plan for a phased re-opening, let us remember the words of St. Paul who says:

Hebrews 10:24-25 || And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

We also want to thank all who gave their labor of love to make this year’s feast a great success: the deacons who tirelessly sung blessed hymns at all the holy week events, those who made food for the congregation, those who arranged flowers, those who cleaned and decorated the Church, those who set up chairs and tents, those who made sure we had streaming available, and all the others who gave their time and resources to make this year’s feast immensely enjoyable for all! God reward you all with every blessing!

God willing, this month, we will re-start the men’s book club meeting which will be kicked off with a barbeque! Also, as parks begin to open, a Church Picnic with food, games, and fun for the families will be coming up! We’ll keep you updated with more information on dates and times through this newsletter, texts, and on our website: stbasil.net.

In Christ,

Fr. Michael Maximous

‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’

APRIL MESSAGE FROM FR. MICHAEL

We are now approximately halfway in this year’s journey through Lent and I hope all of you are enjoying the spiritual benefits of this holy season. During this time we remember that though every spiritual effort has its refreshments and encouragement provided by the Holy Spirit, the effort also exposes challenges and weaknesses that make the journey difficult at times. However, whether it is during a time of strength or a time of weakness, we press forward in faith and hope in our ever-victorious Lord Jesus Christ. Both the comfort of the Holy Spirit and the obstacles put before us by our enemy, encourage us to continue with every assurance that our path is a beneficial and profitable one. Let us remember what our Lord told St. Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

In April:

  • We hope to continue Sunday School Liturgies on Saturdays (no registration), Sunday Liturgies (with registration) and Wednesday liturgies.

  • Our Tuesday night book review meeting, where we review “All That I Have Is Yours” continues through April 20th. So far the discussions have been great and for those who came in person, the food has also been great! If you cannot make it in person, a zoom link will also be provided.

  • Also, Holy Week service schedule will be posted soon, with registration information. Palm Sunday, one of the busiest liturgies of the year, will have a combination of upstairs and downstairs seating, along with tents outdoors (weather permitting).

God grant us every blessing as we approach the victory of the Feast of the Resurrection on May 2nd.

Fr. Michael Maximous

MARCH MESSAGE FROM FATHER MICHAEL

Do you remember March last year? It was the start of the shut downs due to the pandemic! For many, this felt like the longest year on record. As we approach the one-year mark of the pandemic’s impact on our society and families, it is becoming clearer every day that there is reason to be cautiously optimistic about the end of the pandemic. Let’s continue to pray with faith and practice the common sense safety measures we have all become accustomed to.

By God’s grace, during the last year our church has pushed through enormous challenges and has remained vibrant through the prayers, service and continued vigilance of members of the congregation. Ever changing conditions was met with online Zoom meetings (including Sunday school), live streaming through YouTube, outdoor liturgies, and other services. Few could have envisioned where we would be today a year later, but I thank God that St. Basil’s is poised to be stronger than ever, with the grace of our ever-victorious Lord Jesus Christ, once things are opened up more fully.

During this blessed time of Lent, we hope to continue Sunday Liturgy registrations, have a new book series on Tuesday nights and Saturday Sunday-School liturgies with in-person lessons for the kiddos. Also, starting next week, there will be Wednesday liturgies from 11:00-1:30PM. We will also work on the logistics of potentially having Holy Week at St. Basil’s this year, God willing, as we approach the feast of the Resurrection! Stay tuned for more information.

March 8th marks the beginning of the fast of the Great Lent in our Coptic Orthodox Church. Our Lord identifies fasting as worthy of rewards when practiced properly in spirit (Matt. 6:18). The Great Fast is a spiritual journey that we take together as a church and that is also a model of the spiritual life. Any journey has common elements: having a clear destination, mapping out the road to get there, packing provisions, and having a strong resolve to reach the destination and not be distracted along the way. This spiritual journey is no different. Our destination is the cross and the resurrection of our Lord where we see, accept and abide in God’s indescribable love. Along the road ahead of us are temptations and trials which may cause us to stumble and fall. However, our Lord is our companion along this excellent journey and we overcome with His fatherly support. We begin this spiritual journey with a look inwardly, that secret place inside of us where our Lord resides, to make a resolve to get to the destination. In short, our Lord is the Beginning of the Journey, our Support along the way, and the ultimate Destination.

God grant us all a blessed and beneficial Lent fast.

Fr. Michael Maximous

For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.”

Commemoration of the departure of St. Elizabeth, the Mother of St. John the Baptist (Feb 23 / Amshir 16)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.”

Jonah’s (Nineveh) Fast (Feb 22-24 / Amshir 15-17)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.
Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from You."
But He answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.
"When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, "I will return to my house from which I came.' And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation."

Matthew 12:35-45

OUTDOOR LITURGIES

The State of California has designated San Diego County in the “Purple Tier which means there have been spikes in Covid-19 infections in the region. Consequently, we will be transitioning back to outdoor liturgies starting Sunday (November 15th). We pray that this temporary situation is short lived and we can return back inside the church soon. Of course, outdoor liturgies will be dependent on the weather (rain, cold, etc..). Updates will be texted to all the beloved Congregation members.

  • Please continue to register for liturgies as we have been doing for the last few months.

  • If you would like the blessing of coming early to help set up the tents and chairs, please arrive at 7:45.

  • Thank you all for your patience and resilience during this process!

  • Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact Fr. Michael at 949-378-0350.
