Summer Youth Camp (KG - 5th Grade)

Help your children have a fulfilling and spiritually enriching experience this summer! This year, we will use the Diocese prepared material combining Bible Summer Camp with the spiritual competition!

The theme is Fearless Faith: Daniel and the Three Holy Youths’ Bravery in Babylon. Week by week, children will learn about the story of Daniel and his friends—their bravery, their unwavering faith, and the unfolding of God’s perfect plan. In a world where kids face immense pressure to fit in, Daniel's story teaches the importance of staying true to one's faith and identity. Through Daniel's example, children will learn how to stand firm in their Christian values, no matter the challenges they encounter. The curriculum is divided into three comprehension levels: kindergarten to first grade, second to third grade, and fourth to fifth grade.

With learning from the book of Daniel the Prophet, the youth will also learn hymns and have exciting activities. The schedule is below:

  • Tuesday: 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

  • Saturday: 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. (Not this Saturday due to the 4th of July Holiday)

  • Sunday: 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. (During Regular Sunday School times)

Happy Apostles Fast!

(6/24 - 7/11 - Apostles Feast on 7/12/24)

The Apostles Fast (June 24 - July 11, 2024 / Paona 16 - Abib 4, 1740)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

For I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, but we are dishonored! To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless. And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. PEACE AND GRACE

The Departure of St. Athanasius the Apostolic the 20th. Pope of Alexandria (May 15, 2024 / Bashons 7, 1740)

“Let us look at the very tradition, teaching, and faith of the Universal Church from the beginning, which the Lord gave, the Apostles preached, and the Fathers kept. Upon this the Church is founded...”

— (St. Athanasius - 361 AD - Letter to Serapion on the Holy Spirit)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Hebrews 5:12-14

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

For His anger is but for a moment,
His favor is for life;
Weeping may endure for a night,
But joy comes in the morning.
Now in my prosperity I said,
"I shall never be moved."
LORD, by Your favor You have made my mountain stand strong;
You hid Your face, and I was troubled.

Psalm 30:5-7

Holy Week &the FEAST OF THE RESURRECTION PASCHAL MESSAGES

Christ is Risen!  Indeed He is Risen!

It was truly a blessed Holy Week and Feast of the Resurrection this year.  We had a wonderful turnout for our Palm Sunday event. Outside, we had crafts, Palm weaving, stations for each day of Holy Week and a live donkey made a visit for the kids to ride.

Thank you to all our servants, deacons, behind-the-scenes heroes, and everyone else who contributed in their way to make this most important time of the year so blessed.  May the love and beauty of the congregation of St. Basil’s Church continue to grow more and more!

Festal messages from our shepherds:

The Journey of Great Lent and Pascha

MARCH 11th marks the beginning of the fast of the Great Lent in our Coptic Orthodox Church. Our Lord identifies fasting as worthy of rewards when practiced properly in spirit (Matt. 6:18).  The Great Lent is a spiritual journey that we take together as a church and that is also a model of the spiritual life.  Any journey has common elements: having a clear destination, mapping out the road to get there, packing provisions, and having a strong resolve to reach the destination and not be distracted along the way. This spiritual journey is no different.  Our destination is the cross and the resurrection of our Lord where we see, accept and abide in God’s indescribable love. Along the road ahead of us, are temptations and trials which may cause us to stumble and fall.  However, our Lord is our companion along this excellent journey, and we overcome with His Fatherly support.  We begin this spiritual journey with a look inwardly, that secret place inside of us where our Lord resides and where we resolve to get to the destination.  In short, our Lord is the Beginning of the Journey, our Support along the way, and the ultimate Destination.

So Lent is also a time for spiritual renewal through prayer, reading, and works of love and forgiveness. God bless this spiritual journey for all of you and your families!

What is fasting?

  • It is a spiritual means by which the believers deepen their relationship with God

  • It is a means by which the soul can grow in the love of God and gain this spiritual depth by focusing on God who is Spirit and all who approach Him must do so in the spirit and not carnally

  • The many church fasts establishes a profound relationship with God and allows us to feel God in our life.

  • It is a sacred period of spiritual renewal, which belongs to God and devoted entirety Him

Is Fasting Biblical and did the early church fast?

  • Of course!  We see that the prophets of old fasted and so did the apostles.  We are even commanded to fast (Matt 9:15, Acts 10:10, 2 Cor 6:5, Matt 17:21, etc.)

  • Our Lord Jesus Christ fasted for us for 40 days (Matt. 4:2-4)

  • Communal fasting is also Biblical (Esth. 4, Jon.3, Neh.9: 1, Joel 2: 12-17, Acts 13: 2-3, Acts 27:21, etc.)

  • The early church fasted often, and, in many situations, God intervened in wondourous ways when the fast concerned a common issue

How do I fast?

  • Though there are general guidelines that apply to everyone, speak to a spiritual father (priest) for specific advice on how to apply this effective spiritual exercise in your life!

PEACE AND GRACE

Commemoration of St. Pope Kyrillos VI the Wonderworker (March 9, 2024 / Amshir 30, 1740)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.

St. Cyril of Jerusalem on Baptism

Catechetical Lecture 20 - Fourth Century AD

4. After these things, you were led to the holy pool of Divine Baptism, as Christ was carried from the Cross to the Sepulcher which is before our eyes. And each of you was asked, whether he believed in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and you made that saving confession, and descended three times into the water, and ascended again; here also hinting by a symbol at the three days burial of Christ. For as our Saviour passed three days and three nights in the heart of the earth, so you also in your first ascent out of the water, represented the first day of Christ in the earth, and by your descent, the night; for as he who is in the night, no longer sees, but he who is in the day, remains in the light, so in the descent, as in the night, you saw nothing, but in ascending again you were as in the day. And at the self-same moment you were both dying and being born; and that Water of salvation was at the same time your grave and your mother. And what Solomon spoke of others will suit you also; for he said, “There is a time to bear and a time to die” Ecclesiastes 3:2; but to you, in the reverse order, there was a time to die and a time to be born; and one and the same time effected both of these, and your birth went hand in hand with your death.

5. O strange and inconceivable thing! We did not really die, we were not really buried, we were not really crucified and raised again; but our imitation was in a figure, and our salvation in reality. Christ was actually crucified, and actually buried, and truly rose again; and all these things He has freely bestowed upon us, that we, sharing His sufferings by imitation, might gain salvation in reality. O surpassing loving-kindness! Christ received nails in His undefiled hands and feet, and suffered anguish; while on me without pain or toil by the fellowship of His suffering He freely bestows salvation.

6. Let no one then suppose that Baptism is merely the grace of remission of sins, or further, that of adoption; as John's was a baptism conferring only remission of sins: whereas we know full well, that as it purges our sins, and ministers to us the gift of the Holy Spirit, so also it is the counterpart of the sufferings of Christ. For this cause Paul just now cried aloud and said, “Or are you ignorant that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus, were baptized into His death”? We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into His death. These words he spoke to some who were disposed to think that Baptism ministers to us the remission of sins, and adoption, but has not further the fellowship also, by representation, of Christ's true sufferings.

PEACE AND GRACE

Jonah’s Feast (Feb 29, 2024 / Amshir 21, 1740)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry. So he prayed to the Lord, and said, “Ah, Lord, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm. Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live!” Then the Lord said, “Is it right for you to be angry?”
