NATIVITY FAST

November 25th marked the first day of the "Little Fast," also known as the Nativity Fast. Fasting is not just about changing ingredients; it should be a real spiritual discipline with goals. I encourage each of you to take the discipline seriously and to consult with your spiritual father for an appropriate prescription for your fasting period, as well as what spiritual disciplines to partake of during this blessed time. May the Lord bless this fast for all of us and let it be a source of fruit to all of us. -Abouna Antony

St. Barnabas the Apostle, commemorated on 21 Kiahk/30 December

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"It is necessary most of all for one who is fasting to curb anger, to accustom himself to meekness and condescension, to have a contrite heart, to repulse impure thoughts and desires, to examine his conscience, to put his mind to the test and to verify what good has been done by us in this or any other week, and which deficiency we have corrected in ourselves in the present week. This is true fasting."

St. Paul of Tammoh, whose departure is commemorated on 7 Paope/17 October

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“By the death of martyrs religion has been defended, faith increased, the Church strengthened; the dead have conquered, the persecutors have been overcome. And so we celebrate the death of those of whose lives we are ignorant. So, too, David rejoiced in prophecy at the departure of his own soul, saying: ‘Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.’ He esteemed death better than life. The death itself of the martyrs is the prize of their life. And again, by the death of those at variance hatred is put an end to.”
-St. Ambrose of Milan

NEW BUILDING CAMPAIGN

The mission of our church is to bring the ancient faith of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria to English Speakers. Our congregation is fast outgrowing our temporary location, and we are looking to relocate to a permanent home. Having a permanent location would allow us to better outreach the community by being identifiable with the unique traditional style of a Coptic parish and to provide for our community by having the space for a social hall, Sunday School classrooms, and meeting spaces for high school and college youth, and young professionals.

PARISH SERVICE SURVEY

This survey is critical to the church services going forward. This is your chance to speak to what activities, services, and communication you’re looking for and/or can provide to this parish. Please spend just a few moments to fill out the answers the best you can and encourage your friends and family who attend St Basil’s to fill out as well.  The answers are only seen by Fr. Antony and can be anonymous.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"I give thanks to Thee, O my Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Word, who came out of the Father's mouth, who stayed nine months in my womb. I bless Thee, treasure of all good, Thou, that owns all flesh, in whose mouth I gave my milk. I bless Thee, Thou that can be carried, and cannot be contained. Thou, that by a word of Thy power, bears all things, and that I bore in my hands. I bless Thee, Thou, the Patriarchs' life, who was with Abraham, Thou that comforted Isaiah, that expanded Israel. I bless Thee, Thou, the prophecy of the prophets, who came to fulfill them. I bless Thee, Thou, the judges' call and the salvation in struggles. I bless Thee, Thou, the crown of the kings of truth, whose judgments are righteous. I bless Thee, Thou, the Angels' song and the Archangels' hymn. I bless Thee, Thou the Cherubim’s trumpet and the Seraphims' clamor. I bless Thee, Thou, the martyrs' courage and the glory of their crown. I bless Thee, Thou, the virgins' pledge and the light of their lamps. I bless Thee, Thou, the Apostles' preaching and the spreading of the fragrance of their sanctity. I bless Thee, Thou who art my Lord and my Son at the same time. I pray and beseech Thy kindness, be my help and forsake me not. Make my soul leave this prison that I may bear witness to Thee. Let the fire calm down and may Thy mercy go ahead of me. Let the darkness drift away and Thy light appear. Shut the mouth of the enemy who wants to adjoin me to him. Let those who venerate Thy mother's peace come forward, the worm that never dies quickly perish4 and may Thy living mercy strengthen my soul. Yea, my Lord, my God and my Son all in One. At this hour, cast a glance at me whose heart is full of fear and terror. Come unto me, Thou that art the love of my soul. Let Thine Holy Spirit lead me into the straightforward path. Let me worship Thy presence in truth, Lord my God, so that I reveal Thee with the aid of the psalms of Thine truth, Thou to whom is due the glory of Thy Father, who is goodness itself and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen."

The Virgin's Last Prayer, as cited by Fr. Athanasius Iskander in "The Assumption of the Virgin According to St. Theodosius"

SAVE THE DATE - ANNUAL PARISH RETREAT

Just a heads up that our annual St. Basil's parish retreat will be held January 12th-14th, 2018. That means you've got 5 months to make sure you save that weekend in your calendars so our parish family can spend a weekend of fun, fellowship, and edification together!

ABOUNA ANTONY'S CONTACT INFO

Please remember that Abouna Antony has a separate phone number set up for those of us at St. Basil's, to help him keep on top of important news and requests from his parishioners. We should be texting and calling him at that number to help him keep track of his messages. He can be reached at (858) 707-5520.

ANNOUNCEMENTS, VISITATIONS & CONFESSIONS

Please let us know if you have any upcoming important events for us to share with our fellow congregants. WEBSITE & HYMNS

We encourage all congregants to take some time to check out the parish website. All are also encouraged to listen to the liturgical hymns as they are chanted at St. Basil, which can be found here.

FOOD & CLEAN-UP

To sign up to bring food for the agape meal on Sundays, please fill in the weekly spreadsheet available HERE. We need as many volunteers as possible to keep the church clean on Sundays after the Divine Liturgy. Please consider this important expression of stewardship.

EXTRA HELP WITH FOCUS THIS WEEK

While our parish does not typically help serve with FOCUS at God's Extended Hand on the 2nd Wednesday of the month, FOCUS finds itself short on volunteers as of late. In order to eliminate the possibility of cancelling our service there, which would not only mean no dinner for our homeless brothers and sisters but also taking away the only evening off for the workers at God's Extended Hand, we're asking our parishioners to help with serving and clean up, from around 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church will be preparing the meal off site, so no need to help cook). GEH is located at the corner of 16th and Island in Downtown San Diego.
