Christ and the Twelve Disciples

Christ and the Twelve Disciples

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

The Lord chose the Apostles, that they should be with Him, and that he might send them forth to preach, and to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils.

Every Christian is chosen—chosen for similar deeds, namely: to be with the Lord, through unceasing remembrance of Him and awareness of His omnipresence, through the preaching and fulfillment of His commandments, and through a readiness to confess one’s faith in Him. In those circles where such a confession is made, it is a loud sermon for all to hear.

GREAT LENT

As we continue in the Holy and Great Fast, it is important that each of us receives spiritual guidance with regards to how to fast. Abouna Antony has emailed a recommended program for the fast; please ensure you receive guidance from your own spiritual father. Lent is a time of asceticism and self-control; a time for modesty in all that we do. We prepare for the most holy time of the year, where we remember our Lord's agony, death, and far more importantly: resurrection. The life of the Church is is important, we want to live in and with Christ, and this fast helps us bring our whole spiritual life under review.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“It is necessary for a Christian to fast, in order to clear his mind, to rouse and develop his feelings, and to stimulate his will to useful activity. These three human capabilities we darken and stifle above all by ‘surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life’ (Lk. 21:34).”

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"Beware of limiting the good of fasting to mere abstinence from meats. Real fasting is alienation from evil. ‘Loose the bands of wickedness.’ For give your neighbor the mischief he has done you. Forgive him his trespasses against you. Do not ‘fast for strife and debate.’ You do not devour flesh, but you devour your brother. You abstain from wine, but you indulge in outrages. You wait for evening before you take food, but you spend the day in the law courts. Woe to those who are ‘drunken, but not with wine.’ Anger is the intoxication of the soul, and makes it out of its wits like wine."

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

When the same Father Antony meditated on the depth of the judgment of God, he asked, “Lord, how is it that some die when they are young, while others drag on to extreme old age?  And why are some poor and others rich?  Why do wicked people prosper and why are the just in need?  He heard a voice answering him, “Antony, keep your attention on yourself; these things are according to the judgment of God, and it is not to your benefit to know anything about them.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"The prayer of each is manifest to God; one seeks heavenly things affectionately and one seeks them learnedly; one utters his words perfunctorily with the tips of his lips, but his heart is far from God… Thus, let the tongue sing, let the mind interpret the meaning of what has been said, that you may sing with your spirit, that you may sing likewise with your mind. Not at all is God in need of glory, but He wishes us to be worthy of glory."
