PEACE AND GRACE

The Commemoration of The Martyrdom of St. Theodore of Shotep (July 27 / Abib 20)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Looking at his disciples, he said:

“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
Blessed are you who hunger now for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.

“Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.

Luke 6:20-23

JUL 24 || DISCUSSION WITH KRYSTOPHER BENYAMEIN FOR CLIMBING MOUNT EVEREST!

New Date (July 24) Our very own Krys Benyamein, husband of Paige McLean, ascended to the peak of Mount Everest, the tallest point on Earth, on Sunday May 15, 2022!  He is the first Coptic Christian known to have accomplished this amazing deed!  This is no small task and it takes weeks to accomplish.  God willing, Krys will give us a presentation about his adventure during Sunday School immediately after the liturgy (July 17th)!

Property Updates

  • Refinancing Complete - We were able to work with the diocese to complete the needed refinancing of the Church’s mortgage loan just in time before the major increases in interest rates. However, the closing costs ($14,347.32) have had a significant impact to the Church’s finances. If you would like to help the church replenish this amount, please consider donating by clicking here. God bless!

  • Entry Painting: Have you noticed something new as you walk up the stairs? That’s right! Some very talented individuals in the church have offered their time and talent to help decorate the main entry to the sanctuary!

  • Roof maintenance: Annual roof maintenance will occur in the coming weeks and no impact to services are anticipated. This essential maintenance effort includes a fresh seal over the entire roof to help ensure no leaks occur!

  • Coffee Station: Some of you have already enjoyed the lattés and expressos after the liturgy. More improvements to the coffee station area are being planned so stay tuned! If you would like to help serve coffee or be involved in the planning of this station, please let Fr. Michael or Sherif Hanna know!

  • Upgraded Security Cameras: Updated security cameras will be installed throughout the church as an added security measure! Recall that last year, there was a break-in so such cameras will serve as a deterrent as well as capture important footage, if needed.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THOSE BAPTIZED!

Congratulations to Caleb Betts and Florence Wu for their baptism!  Also, congratulations to Collin and Sara for the baptism of their son, Isaac Collin Feduska!  God bless your journey with our Lord Jesus Christ and to experience His many excellent graces!

Your shining robe now arouses admiration in the eyes of all who behold you, and the radiance of your garments proves that your souls are free from every blemish. For the future, all of you, both you who have just deserved the gift (of baptism) and all who have already reaped for yourselves the benefit of His great generosity, must make the excellence of your conduct visible to all and, after the fashion of a torch, you must illumine those who look upon you… let us be eager to preserve this beauty in its full bloom and let us learn what can keep it bright. ~ St. John Chrysostom (Baptismal Instructions)

Commemoration of the Departure of St. Helena, The Empress (May 6 / Baramouda 28)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. This is the bread which came down from heaven--not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever."

Jn 6:54-58

COVID UPDATE

Many of you may have heard, or have been directly impacted by, the recent surge of COVID cases.  We pray for each and every one of those who have been impacted and ask our Lord to grant a speedy and full recovery to those who were affected.

When coming to Church, please be reminded of the practices that we have been accustomed to over the past two years:

  • If you are experiencing flu-like, cold-like or allergy symptoms, please get tested. If you have tested positive, please:

    • Seek a healthcare professional for helpful treatments

    • Please do not come to church for five days after the exposure and until you are showing no symptoms

  • Please feel comfortable wearing a mask at church

Also, weather permitting, Sunday School will be outdoors.  If you have any questions, please contact Fr. Michael at 949-378-0350.

WONDERFUL VISIT TO ST. KATHARINE AND ST. VERENA CONVENT!

A few of us from St. Basil’s experienced a wonderful day on Saturday with the nuns at the new St. Katherine of Alexandria and St. Verena Coptic Orthodox Convent.  This convent is currently home to four nuns (Mother Parthenia, Mother Eraey, Mother Verena, and Mother Agnes) who arrived from St. George’s Convent in Old Cairo, Egypt earlier this year. The convent is intended to be a haven for women of all ages to spend time in prayer, retreat, and reflection. The day started with a beautiful liturgy, an agape meal and a spiritual talk with the nuns.  Future trips will be planed as they currently allow only small groups (approximately ten) for each visit.  If you wish to attend future visits, contact Mariana Maximous at (949)291-3546. Visit laconvent.org to learn more about this great blessing in our diocese.
