PEACE & BLESSINGS

St. Mary’s Fast: August 7th - 21st

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Now it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, that He took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray. As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening. And behold, two men talked with Him, who were Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of His decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. But Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep; and when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who stood with Him.”

Luke 9:28-32

NEW CHURCH BUILDING CAMPAIGN

As many of you have noticed, our church family has been growing steadily over the past several years. This is a great blessing from God, and we thank Him for it. That growth comes with a demand for increased pastoral need and larger facilities.

Larger Building! The board gave a strategy presentation on February 22, 2026, on finding a new and larger home for St. Basil’s Church. If you missed it, reach out to one of the board members or Fr. Michael. CLICK HERE to discover ways you can help in this worthwhile venture that will positively impact our community for generations to come! If you did not receive it, contact Fr. Michael at 949-378-0350! God bless your efforts!

And the leaders of the fathers’ houses offered willingly. They gave for the work of the house of God… according to their ability. ~ Ezra 2:68–69

AGAPE MEAL AFTER THE LITURGY

Hello St. Basil family! After every Divine Liturgy, our agape meal means more than food — it is fellowship, healing, and a living expression of our unity in Christ. “They continued steadfastly… in the breaking of bread and in prayers” (Acts 2:42) reminds us that from the earliest days of the church, believers gathered after worship to share life together. This simple meal becomes a lifeline for newcomers trying to find their place, for those who feel alone and long for community, and for every soul who needs to experience the love of Christ in practical, tangible ways. The volunteers who serve in this ministry quietly carry a sacred responsibility: They help people feel seen, included, and loved.  This is why hospitality is an amazing virtue! Hebrews 13:2 says “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.”

We are deeply grateful to the few who continue to offer their time, energy, and generosity despite the challenges. Your service is a fragrance of Christ among us! At the same time, we warmly invite others to join this beautiful ministry to lighten the burden on the few. Preparing or serving food may seem small, but in God’s eyes it is an act of love that strengthens the bonds of our parish family and proclaims, without words, that we are “one body in Christ, and individually members of one another” (Romans 12:5). If you feel called to help build St. Basil’s community so no one stands alone, please consider joining this blessed service. Your hands can become instruments of fellowship, hospitality, and grace.

You can help in the following ways:

  1. Sign up to bring food (Please refrain from excessive sweets).

  2. Sign up for the coffee cart: set up and clean up the coffee cart on Sunday morning.

  3. Hall clean-up following the agape meal.

Please CLICK HERE to sign up.

God bless your efforts!

Repose of St. Joseph the Carpenter (August 2, 2026 / Abib 26, 1742)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.’”

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

James 1:2-8

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.

And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?”

Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?”

And He said to them, “What things?”

So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”

Luke 24:13-24

The Departure of Elisha the Prophet (June 27, 2026 / Paona 20, 1742)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Therefore he sent horses and chariots and a great army there, and they came by night and surrounded the city. And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, ‘Alas, my master! What shall we do?’

So he answered, ‘Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ And Elisha prayed, and said, ‘Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.’ Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. So when the Syrians came down to him, Elisha prayed to the Lord, and said, ‘Strike this people, I pray, with blindness.’ And He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.”

Glorious Feast of Pentecost

May 31, 2026 / Bashans 23, 1742

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 2:1-4

CHRIST IS RISEN!

INDEED, HE IS RISEN!

QUOTES FROM ST. ATHANASIUS

  • And I against the world!

  • Be of good heart! It is only a cloud, and will soon pass away!

  • All the disciples of Christ despise death, they take the offensive against it and, instead of fearing it, by the sign of the cross and by faith in Christ trample on it as on something dead.

  • The renewal of creation has been accomplished by the Self-same Word who made it in the beginning.

  • For the truth is not preached with swords or with darts, nor by means of soldiers; but by persuasion and counsel.

  • One cannot possibly understand the teaching of the saints unless one has a pure mind and is trying to imitate their life... , anyone who wishes to understand the mind of the sacred writers must first cleanse his own life, and approach the saints by copying their deeds

  • Let us look at the very tradition, teaching, and faith of the Universal Church from the beginning, which the Lord gave, the Apostles preached, and the Fathers kept.
Upon this the Church is founded...

St. Athanasius the Apostolic

Congratulations Caleb and Marissa!

On May 9th, Caleb and Marissa were joined in Holy Matrimony according to the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Rites!

God bless your new family’s journey with Christ together!

Below is a beautiful hymn that was sung during the ceremony. What is especially beautiful is that although it is used in the marriage rite, the hymn is not primarily about the earthly bride and groom. It was sung as a condensed history of salvation told through the voice of the Church (with each of its members) as the Bride of Christ.

Nomination for a Second Priest To Serve at St. Basil’s

As we announced the last two Sundays after the liturgy, it’s with great joy that we announce that Anthony Zaki is a candidate for the priesthood to serve at St. Basil’s Church!

Anthony, along with his wife Jasmin, has been serving faithfully at St. Basil’s for over a year and are locals to San Diego. They’ve been deeply involved in many services at the church including both youth and adult ministries. They’ve shown dedication, humility, and genuine love for the people of the church, especially our youth.

The congregation was asked to provide feedback in two ways:

  • If you agree with the nomination, and you missed signing the petition the last couple Sundays recommending Anthony to His Eminence Metropolitan Serapion for his approval, please text Fr. Michael your approval by Wednesday, April 1, 2026 and your name will be added to the petition.

  • If you have concerns, please reach out to Fr. Michael Maximous or to His Eminence Metropolitan Serapion directly.

Please approach this moment with prayer, discernment, and a spirit of unity and love.

Also, please keep Anthony and Jasmin in your prayers during this time and be sensitive to the great sacrifice they are willing to make for Christ and His Church.

May our Ever-Victorious Lord Jesus Christ guide them and guide His Church according to His perfect will and to the glory of His Name!

The Departure of Lazarus, the beloved of the Lord (March 26, 2026 / Baramhat 17, 1742)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.” Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.”

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Nikita (Paul)! May God bless you on your journey with Christ and may His Holy Spirit guide and sanctify you!

Charitable Campaign

One of our youth asked this be posted in the newsletter. They are trying to raise money for a charitable cause in her college club. Please note this charity and its campaign is not affiliated with St. Basil’s or the Coptic Orthodox Church. God bless.
